Week 6 Reading: PDE Mahabharata Part A

Vyasa seems to be a very important person to and in the Mahabharata. I think that it is very cool that he is both an author and a character. His birth story is very interesting but I think Satyavati is the star of this origin story. I really like how she maneuvered and worked to get what she wanted. I hope that she and Vyasa play a large role in this story as a whole.
The story of the goddess Ganga is one that I can see myself coming up with a retelling. I really like how she married but would not tolerate harsh language from her husband. I feel like she should have been more open with him about what was happening and who she was and they would not have had a problem. I was happy that she introduced him to his child later on though.
I am very surprised at the vow that Devavrata took and also his name change to Bhishma. I wonder if his motivation was pure in giving his sire a bride. I really like that Bhishma has more power than just his obvious selflessness. His abilities with arrows really came in handy when escorting the three princesses back to his half-brother.
Amba's story is crazy but it makes for an intriguing story. Her character is very determined and driven. Pandu's curse impacts his life and eventually ends it. There are too many characters and plots to approach each individually. However, I want to spend the last bit of this blog post talking about Gandhari and the Kauravas. Gandhari is a main character in my storybook and her self-blinding and the Kauravas are the most intriguing parts of her story I think. Learning that the Pandavas and Kauravas spent time together makes me wonder if their stories will entwine later on. The Mahabharata pulls me in more than the Ramayana did. I find it easier to read and I like the characters.
